As we have entered the age when nothing can be done efficiently without the support of IT and computers have replaced paper and pens, everyone at the office is tapping on the keyboard as a matter of course. But is everyone truly sharing the benefit of I T (Information Technology)? Is everyone able to enjoy the convenience of the internet? I feel we have not reached that level yet. There are elderly persons who are left feeling lost in front of an ATM at banks. There are executives who need to depend on their secretaries for sending mail. There are children who can only use play games. As the expression ¡ÈDigital Divide¡É indicates, there still are many people who are unable to make use of IT around us. In spite of the fact that a vast sea of information was born thanks to IT, there are numerous people unable to swim around in it freely to get necessary information.
 Aiming at the ultimate human interface
Isn¡Çt there a magic wand with which anyone one can tap on the door to computers to enter the world of information? We launched research six years ago to develop a way to use "natural language" and "voice" as tools for ultimate human interface accessing computers. What is a "Conversation", the basic human communication behavior? We have developed an original algorithmic recognition technology to examine the fundamental issue of how intention or context is mutually understood through "conversations", develop mathematical models of semantic recognition, and produce an original dictionary defining correlations of meaning, and finally succeeded in developing "CAIWA", a system possessing never before existing, highly advanced semantic recognition functions.
The "conversation", or CAIWA in Japanese, can be said to be a tool for expressing thoughts using languages. If computers or machines can precisely receive this semantic expression, the "CAIWA" will be reborn with interface functions. If machines can be operated by "CAIWA", or if machines can be manipulated by "language" to draw information, it would be the most convenient and easily utilized interface. Elderly persons who have been unable to use computers, physically disabled persons, or persons who have not been able to access computers till now will be able to use computers with our "CAIWA".

Receiving such a verbal command as "Please turn off the TV", the "CAIWA" agent will turn off the TV for us. That one can converse with computers means that one is able to directly create an agent. Furthermore, this agent not only obeys people¡Çs commands but will also be able play the role of a ¡Èconsulting agent¡É which will offer proper advice to solve problems. For example, by inputting responsive contents for consultation about child care into the agent¡Çs knowledge base, a child care agent is established. At the present time where human communications are becoming increasingly sparse, there are many people who are worried, unable to find consulting partners even on trifling matters. People¡Çs minds can be greatly eased if opportunities to express their worries, to have their worries be listened to, or just to talk are made possible. I, as a developer of CAIWA, place great hope in the enormous role "CAIWA" may successfully play as such a consulting agent.
True tow-way communication starts with "CAIWA".
Human beings are said to be animals that can not survive alone. In our society we live by supporting each other while having someone else act as our partner, and through various types of communication. Besides consulting, people want give out information and not just listen. In times of trouble they can counsel one another. Everyone wants to convey his/her thoughts or behaviors to others when they are excited about something. Conventional two-way communicative media has included letters, telephones, e-mail, or contributions to periodicals, but on the other side of such media there have always been living human beings. But what can we do when we wish to convey our impressions or opinions in real time to such one way media as television, radio or websites? We believe that in such situations the solution is the agent "CAIWA". "CAIWA" will listen to your opinions and will offer you prompt answers if possible. Direct inquiries or order placements will become possible for on line TV shopping programs. "CAIWA" is so effective that previous one way communication will be transformed to two-way communicative media.
The ultimate way to convey your thoughts and opinions to a greater number of people is to incorporate your thoughts into the knowledge base and expose it through a media such as your blog page. In other words, it is to create your other self, an agent, and let everyone have access through "CAIWA". People who do not know you can talk to your other self, the agent, asking for example, ¡ÈWhat types of people do you like?" and your other self, the agent, will responds, "someone gentle to living things and warm-hearted to people." Conversations can be carried on like this to send off your thoughts and opinions to numerous people.
Communication that "CAIWA" brings to realization is not like that with cold media such as a conversation with virtual machines because lively minds and thoughts will be stored in the knowledge base.
